After Lieutenant-General Sir Gerald Graham had assembled his 13, 000 troops at Suakin during the 1st Sudan War (1884-1885), he moved to engage the main concentrations of Mahdists. On 20 March 1885 at the Battle of Hashin he defeated a detachment of Osman Dignas army, inflicting upon them a loss of about 1, 000 killed.
