EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Ms Fr 2810 f. 3v, Kublai Khan giving Nicolo and Marco Polo safe conduct to Peking" transports us back in time to the fascinating world of exploration and adventure. Painted by the talented Boucicaut Master in the early 15th century, this tempera on vellum artwork captures a significant moment in history. In this scene, we witness Kublai Khan, the powerful Mongol emperor, bestowing his golden seal upon Nicolo and Marco Polo at Cambaluc in 1292. This act symbolizes their safe passage to Peking (modern-day Beijing), granting them permission to explore and trade within his vast empire. Le Livre des Merveilles (Book of Wonders) serves as a record of various travels throughout Asia, including those of renowned figures such as Marco Polo himself. The book also includes accounts from other explorers like Odorico de Pordone and Ricaldo da Monte di Croce. Marco Polo's own journey began when he was just a child; raised by his aunt and uncle after losing his mother at an early age. His father, Niccolo Polo, had ventured into the Middle East as a merchant before meeting Kublai Khan during his travels. Inspired by their encounters with the Mongol ruler, they returned home to Venice where they reunited with young Marco for the first time. This remarkable print not only showcases artistic brilliance but also invites us to delve into history's most thrilling tales of discovery and cultural exchange.
