EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Blue-backed Manakin, and the Red and Black Manakin" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann to combine elements from Catesby's work on Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. The image depicts two stunning bird species: the Blue-backed Manakin and the Red and Black Manakin. These vibrant creatures are brought to life through intricate details that highlight their unique features. The blue plumage of the Blue-backed Manakin contrasts beautifully with its red-headed counterpart, creating a visually striking composition. Seligmann's contribution to this print is evident in his translation of names into German as well as his addition of figures and plants not present in the original engravings. This collaboration between two talented artists adds depth and richness to an already remarkable piece. With its historical significance in natural history illustration, this print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific exploration. It offers viewers a glimpse into the world of these fascinating avian species while also showcasing the talent of Edwards, Seligmann, and their dedication to capturing nature's beauty through art. Displayed proudly within a private collection, this coloured engraving continues to captivate audiences with its timeless charm.
