EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Canada Goose, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of Mark Catesby and Michael Seligmann. The print, part of a private collection, is a remarkable collaboration between two talented individuals from different eras. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, Seligmann took it upon himself to re-engrave the plates and merge them with Catesby's work on Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. In this process, he translated the names into German and added additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. "The Canada Goose" print beautifully captures the essence of this majestic bird species known as Anser canadensis. Its vibrant colours and intricate details bring these creatures to life on paper. This artwork serves as a testament to both nature's beauty and human creativity. Displayed by ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, this engraving holds immense historical value as it represents an important chapter in natural history exploration. It offers viewers a glimpse into the world of birds through meticulous illustration techniques that have stood the test of time. As we admire this piece from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we are reminded of our deep connection with nature and how art has played an integral role in documenting its wonders throughout history.
