EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the beauty and intricacy of nature, featuring "The Crested or Coped Black Vulture" and "the Black and White Indian Snake". Created by George Edwards in 1749-73, this coloured engraving has been re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer. Originally part of Edwards' works on uncommon birds and natural history gleanings, Seligmann combined these plates with Catesby's work on Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. He translated the names into German while adding additional figures and plants not present in the originals. In this image, we see a striking black vulture with an elegant crest or cap atop its head. The vulture exudes power as it perches confidently on a branch. Its feathers are meticulously detailed to capture every nuance of texture. Accompanying the vulture is a black-and-white Indian snake coiled gracefully nearby. The snake's contrasting colors create a visually stunning effect against its surroundings. Both creatures are depicted with remarkable accuracy that highlights their unique characteristics. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an educational tool for those interested in birds, animals, natural history, or illustration. It reminds us of the incredible diversity found within our natural world and invites us to marvel at its wonders through this exquisite piece of artwork.
