EDITORS COMMENTS
The Crowned Eagle, 1749-73 (coloured engraving) captures the majestic beauty of this regal bird. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a testament to the collaboration between two talented artists from different eras. Originally featured in Edwards' renowned works A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History, Seligmann took it upon himself to enhance these plates with his own artistic touch. Combining them with Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, he added German translations for names and introduced additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The result is a stunning portrayal of Aquila aurita s. coronata guineensis - The Crowned Eagle. Its vibrant colors come alive on the page, showcasing every intricate detail of its feathers and fierce gaze. This engraving serves as both an educational tool for natural history enthusiasts and a visual masterpiece that can be appreciated by art lovers alike. Now part of a private collection, this print continues to captivate viewers with its timeless charm. It stands as a reminder that even centuries later, nature's wonders can still inspire awe through skilled craftsmanship.
