EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Golden-crowned Wren, and the Ruby-crowned Wren" showcases the exquisite beauty of these avian wonders. Created by George Edwards in 1749-73, this print is a true testament to his talent as an illustrator and naturalist. The image features two distinct species of wrens - the Golden-crowned Wren and the Ruby-crowned Wren. Their vibrant plumage is meticulously captured, with intricate details that bring them to life on paper. The golden crown atop one wren's head contrasts beautifully with the ruby-colored crest adorning the other. Originally engraved by Edwards himself, this particular print was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a renowned German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' work with that of Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" adding his own touch by translating names into German and including additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. "The Golden-crowned Wren, and the Ruby-crowned Wren" serves as a stunning example of nature's diversity and artistic expression. It reminds us of our connection to wildlife while showcasing both scientific accuracy and aesthetic appeal.
