EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Goldfish from China, 1749-73" transports us back to the 18th century when George Edwards first created this masterpiece. The print showcases a stunning array of gold and silver fish swimming gracefully in their aquatic habitat. Originally engraved by George Edwards himself, this particular version was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a talented German artist and art dealer. Seligmann combined Edwards' work with that of Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" translating names into German and adding additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The attention to detail in this illustration is truly remarkable; each fish is meticulously depicted with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. The composition exudes a sense of tranquility as we observe these elegant creatures gliding through the water. "The Goldfish from China" serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific curiosity during this period of natural history exploration. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate the beauty found within nature's diverse creations. This particular print is part of a private collection but has been made available for public appreciation thanks to ePurix Verlag Volker Christen. Its inclusion in Fine Art Finder allows enthusiasts worldwide to admire its splendor while celebrating the rich heritage of ornithology, zoology, and botanical illustration.
