EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The little Black Monkey" transports us back to the 18th century, where George Edwards and Michael Seligmann's artistic collaboration comes to life. The print showcases a small black monkey, known as Cercopithecus niger minimus austro americanus manibus et pedibus croceis in Latin, with its striking yellow hands and feet. Originally engraved by George Edwards for his renowned works on uncommon birds and natural history, this particular print was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg, combined Edwards' plates with Mark Catesby's work on the natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. He translated names into German while adding additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. The result is an exquisite fusion of artistry that captures both the beauty of nature and the skillful craftsmanship of these talented artists. The intricate details in this illustration bring forth a sense of wonder about our diverse animal kingdom. Displayed against a neutral background within a private collection, this print serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with animals throughout history. It reminds us of our connection to nature and invites contemplation on the delicate balance between human existence and wildlife preservation. As we admire "The little Black Monkey" we are reminded that art has always been an avenue through which we explore our world's wonders – be it through scientific observation or creative interpretation
