EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Long-tailed Sparrow, and the Dusky Linnet" a beautifully colored engraving created by George Edwards in 1749-73. The artwork is part of a private collection and holds significant historical value. Originally engraved by Edwards himself in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular piece was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with the work of Mark Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". He translated the names into German while adding additional figures and plants not present in the original engravings. "The Long-tailed Sparrow, and the Dusky Linnet" captures two exquisite bird species - Passer cauda longissima (Long-tailed Sparrow) and Linaria fusca (Dusky Linnet). The illustration beautifully portrays these creatures in their natural habitat with meticulous attention to detail. This print offers an opportunity to appreciate both nature's beauty and historical artistic collaboration. It serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship of both George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Whether you are an avid bird enthusiast or simply admire fine art, this enchanting image will undoubtedly captivate your imagination.
