EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Ribband-Fish, 1749-73" a beautifully colored engraving by George Edwards. Originally engraved for his works on uncommon birds and natural history, this particular version was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with the work of Mark Catesby, specifically "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". In this collaboration, Seligmann translated the names into German and added additional figures and plants not found in the original works. "The Ribband-Fish" depicted in this print is truly mesmerizing. With its elegantly striped body in shades of brown and white, it stands out as a remarkable specimen. The fish's most striking feature is its exceptionally long anterior dorsal fin. This unique characteristic sets it apart from other marine creatures. As we delve into the world of natural history through this image, we are reminded of the diversity that exists within our wildlife. The intricate details captured in this engraving bring to life not only the beauty but also the complexity of these creatures. This print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific exploration. It allows us to appreciate nature's wonders while simultaneously honoring the craftsmanship behind such exquisite engravings.
