EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Short-tailed Pye and the Rhinoceros Beetle" is a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. Created by George Edwards in 1749-73, this print showcases his exceptional talent for capturing the beauty and intricacy of birds and animals. Originally engraved by Edwards himself in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular version was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg, combined Edwards' plates with Mark Catesby's work on "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". What makes this print even more special is that Seligmann translated all the names into German while adding some unique figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. This fusion creates an extraordinary blend of artistic styles that truly brings these creatures to life. "The Short-tailed Pye" refers to a bird species known for its distinctive short tail feathers. It gracefully perches on a branch alongside another marvel of nature - the Rhinoceros Beetle. The attention to detail in both creatures' features is remarkable; every feather, scale, or texture has been meticulously rendered. This enchanting piece serves as a testament to the beauty found within our natural world. Its timeless appeal continues to captivate viewers today as it stands proudly among other notable works in private collections worldwide.
