EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Towhe Bird. The Cowpen Bird" showcases the exquisite artistry of Mark Catesby and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by George Edwards, this print is a combination of two renowned works in natural history - A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History. The image depicts two beautiful birds, the black towhe bird with red eyes and the brown cowpen bird. Each feather is intricately detailed, capturing their unique characteristics with precision. The vibrant colors bring these avian creatures to life, making them appear almost ready to take flight from the page. Michael Seligmann's re-engraving adds an extra layer of depth to this already stunning artwork. Translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the originals, he enhances our understanding and appreciation for these magnificent creatures. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to a world where nature's wonders were meticulously studied and documented through art. It serves as a testament to the dedication and passion that artists like Catesby, Edwards, and Seligmann had for preserving the beauty of our natural world. This enchanting piece belongs to a private collection but has been made available for all to admire thanks to ePurix Verlag Volker Christen. It reminds us of the importance of cherishing our planet's biodiversity while also celebrating the artistic talents that help us understand it better.
