EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Turn-Stone from Hudson's Bay, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann. Seligmann, a talented German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg, combined Edwards' plates with the work of Catesby in "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". In this collaboration, Seligmann translated the names into German while also adding some figures and plants that were not present in the original works. "The Turn-Stone from Hudson's Bay" is a mesmerizing depiction of Morinellus canadensis - a bird native to North America. The intricate details captured through engraving bring this creature to life on paper. Its feathers are meticulously rendered with vibrant colours that highlight its distinctive markings. This print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific exploration. It exemplifies how artists like Edwards and Seligmann played an essential role in documenting natural history during their time. Through their engravings, they allowed people to marvel at the beauty and diversity found within our natural world. Now preserved in a private collection but made available for public appreciation through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen's efforts, this remarkable piece continues
