EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Whip-Poor-Will or lesser Goat-Sucker" takes us back to the 18th century, showcasing the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. The print, now part of a private collection, is a testament to their collaborative efforts in depicting the wonders of nature. Originally engraved by George Edwards for his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular piece was re-engraved by Seligmann. Combining Edwards' illustrations with Catesby's work on American natural history, Seligmann added his own touch by translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The image portrays a beautiful bird known as Caprimulgus minor americanus or commonly referred to as the Whip-Poor-Will. Its delicate features are brought to life through intricate lines and vibrant colors meticulously applied by skilled hands. This enchanting creature stands out against a backdrop that hints at its natural habitat. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time when scientific exploration merged seamlessly with artistic expression. It serves as a reminder of our fascination with the animal kingdom and our desire to capture its beauty for generations to come. Through this artwork, we can appreciate both the talent of these talented artists and gain insight into how our understanding of nature has evolved over centuries.
