EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The white-crowned Pigeon, 1749-73" transports us back to the 18th century world of natural history exploration. Created by Mark Catesby and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print showcases the exquisite beauty of the white-crowned pigeon, also known as Columba capite albo. With meticulous detail and vibrant colors, the artist brings this magnificent bird to life on paper. The white-crowned pigeon is elegantly perched on a branch amidst lush foliage, its distinctive features carefully depicted - from its regal crown of feathers to its graceful posture. Originally featured in George Edwards' A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History, Seligmann's re-engraving combines Edwards' work with Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. This collaboration not only translates names into German but also adds new elements such as additional figures and plants that were absent in the original works. As we gaze upon this enchanting illustration, we are reminded of the importance placed on documenting nature during this era. Through artistry and scientific curiosity, these early naturalists sought to capture every intricate detail for future generations to appreciate.
