EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Yellow Red-pole, and the Black Gros-beak" is a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. Created by George Edwards in the mid-18th century, this print showcases his exceptional talent for capturing the beauty and intricacy of birds. Originally engraved by Edwards himself in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular version was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. A German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg, Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with Mark Catesby's work on "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". What makes this print even more remarkable is that Seligmann translated all the names into German while adding some additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. This fusion of artistic talents resulted in a unique representation that appeals to both nature enthusiasts and art lovers alike. "The Yellow Red-pole" with its vibrant plumage contrasting against the deep black feathers of "the Black Gros-beak" creates a visually stunning composition. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring as every feather seems to come alive on paper. Displayed here as part of a private collection, this print serves as a testament to the timeless allure of natural history illustrations. It reminds us how artists like George Edwards continue to inspire generations through their dedication to capturing nature's wonders with unparalleled skill and precision.
