Queen Mary II (1662-1694), 1703 (engraving)

5846110 Queen Mary II (1662-1694), 1703 (engraving) by Mortier, Pierre (Pieter) (1661-1711); The Peace Palace Library, The Hague, The Netherlands; (add.info.: Mary II was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland and daughter of King James II and VII. She was married to her cousin, William of Orange, in 1677 at the age of fifteen. When her father, a Roman Catholic, ascended to the throne in 1685 to the displeasure of the mainly Protestant British populace, her husband was convinced to invade England in 1689 and overthrow her father in what was known as the Glorious Revolution.
Mary ruled as equal sovereign with her husband, their joint reign often referred to as that of William and Mary, though in truth she ceded most of her authority to her husband when he was in England; despite this, William relied heavily on her, and she would act alone whenever William was militarily engaged abroad. Mary proved herself to be a powerful and effective ruler until her death in 1694.); French, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Queen Mary II (1662-1694), 1703" showcases the regal and influential figure of Queen Mary II. Created by Pierre Mortier, a renowned French artist, this print offers a glimpse into the life and reign of one of England's most notable queens. Mary II was not only Queen of England but also Scotland and Ireland. Born as the daughter of King James II and VII, she faced political turmoil due to her father's unpopular religious beliefs. In 1677, at just fifteen years old, she married her cousin William of Orange. The image portrays Mary as a symbol of strength and resilience during turbulent times. Her marriage to William played a pivotal role in what became known as the Glorious Revolution—a momentous event that saw them overthrowing her own father from the throne in 1689. Although their joint reign is often referred to as that of William and Mary, it is important to note that Mary held considerable power herself. While William was occupied with military engagements abroad, she ruled effectively on her own accord. Tragically, Queen Mary II passed away in 1694 at the age of thirty-two; however, her legacy lives on through this remarkable engraving. It serves as a testament to her significant contributions as an influential ruler who navigated complex political landscapes with grace and determination.
