The Crowning of Otto II and Theophano - A Symbolic Union of Power and Blessing

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a remarkable moment in history, depicting "The Crowning of Otto II (955-983) and Theophano (958-991)" from a plaque binding dating back to the 10th century. Measuring at 18x10 cm, this ivory masterpiece is housed in the Musee National du Moyen Age et des Thermes de Cluny in Paris. At its center stands Christ, under a majestic canopy, flanked by Emperor Otto II and Empress Theophano. Both royals are adorned in resplendent imperial attire. In an act that signifies both blessing and coronation, Christ places his hands on their heads with divine grace. Otto II, known as "the Red" was the son of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I and Princess Adelaide of Burgundy. His union with Theophano further solidified their power within the Holy Roman Empire. Notably, she was not only his wife but also held regency as Empress dowager after his untimely death in 983. Adding depth to this historical tableau is John Philagathos, Bishop of Plaisance, depicted as the donor figure on the bottom left corner. This exquisite piece showcases Byzantine artistry at its finest. Through this photograph's lens, we are transported back through time to witness a pivotal moment where earthly power intertwines with divine blessings—a testament to the enduring legacy of these influential figures who shaped medieval Europe's political landscape.
