EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Conference of 18th August, 1604" takes us back to a significant historical event. Created by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger in the early 17th century, this print captures a momentous meeting between English and foreign commissioners during the reign of James I and VI. The composition is divided into two distinct groups: on one side of the table are the English delegates, while on the other side sit their foreign counterparts. The attention to detail is remarkable as each individual is labeled with reference letters and numerals within the picture itself. Amongst the prominent figures from England are Thomas Earl of Dorset, Charles Earl of Nottingham, Charles Earl of Devonshire, Henry Earl of Nottingham, and Robert Viscount Cranbourne. These influential men held important positions such as High Treasurer, High Admiral, Lieutenant in Ireland, Lord Warden and Admiral of Cinque Ports respectively. Representing Spain at this conference were Juan de Velasco (Constable), Juan Baptista de Tassis (Earl), and Alessandro Rovida (Professor). The Archdukes' delegation included Charles Prince and Count Aremberg (Admiral General), Jean Richardot (President), and Ludovic Verreyken (Principal Secretary). Printed by Manzi Joyant & Co. Paris in 1904 using collotype technique which beautifully replicates every intricate detail from Gheeraerts' original work. This particular print belongs to a private collection known as The Stapleton Collection. With its historical significance preserved through time thanks to Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform's efforts to digitize it for public viewing purposes only; this artwork serves as a testament to diplomacy during an era marked by international relations complexities.
