EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving of an Indian Tapir takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing the incredible artistry and attention to detail of the German School. The print, now part of a private collection, is a true testament to the beauty and diversity found in nature. Illustrated by C. Weber and engraved by A. Fleischmann, this artwork was originally featured in "A Die SAaugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen" a publication by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber. This comprehensive work on natural history was published between 1774 and 1855. The image depicts a magnificent Schabrackentapir or Malaysischer Tapir, also known as an Indian Tapir. With its distinctive black-and-white coat pattern and unique elongated snout, this species stands out among other tapirs. Tapirus indicus, as it is scientifically known, belongs to the family of mammals called tapirs. Native to Southeast Asia including Malaysia and Indonesia, these gentle creatures are fascinating subjects for both scientists and artists alike. This finely detailed engraving captures every nuance of the tapir's appearance with precision and skillful shading techniques. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, humans were captivated by the wonders of wildlife. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform, we can still appreciate this remarkable piece today – an enduring tribute to one of nature's most intriguing creatures: the Indian Tapir.
