Commercially produced by British Small Arms Company, Birmingham, 1898 circa.
Although souvenir firearms associated with British forces are not common, they do exist, intricately carved with the locations of actions fought by a particular regiment. This carbine is carved with the names of engagements in which the East Lancashire Regiment was involved (Cape Colony; Transvaal; Riet River; Karee Vet River; Zand River; Bloemfontein; Joannesburg and Orange Free State). It belonged to Captain Lancelot Hamber (1862-1926) who served in the regiment during the Boer War (1899-1902). The butt is also carved with HamberAs initials A L.C.B.HA, A XXX REGTA and the date A 1902A.
The origins of this carbine are not known; it is not a service-issue weapon but a privately purchased gun. It may have been carried by Hamber or he may have acquired it from a colonial unit involved in the war.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Martini-Metford/Enfield . 45 inch breech-loading artillery carbine, dating back to 1899-1902. The exquisite craftsmanship of this firearm is evident in its intricate carvings, which depict the various engagements of the East Lancashire Regiment during the Boer War. Produced by the British Small Arms Company in Birmingham around 1898, this carbine belonged to Captain Lancelot Hamber (1862-1926), who served in the regiment during the war. The butt of the gun bears Hamber's initials A. L. C. B. HA, along with "A XXX REGTA" and "A 1902" adding a personal touch to this historical artifact. Interestingly, this particular weapon was not issued by the military but privately purchased. Its origins remain unknown; it could have been carried by Hamber himself or acquired from another unit involved in the conflict. The print captures every detail of this remarkable piece, allowing viewers to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic beauty. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it serves as a testament to Captain Hamber's service and his connection to significant battles such as Cape Colony, Transvaal, Riet River, Karee Vet River, Zand River, Bloemfontein Johannesburg, and Orange Free State. This image offers us a glimpse into an era when firearms were not only instruments of warfare but also objects that held sentimental value for those who wielded them on behalf of their country.
