Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. From 1904, he served as its colonel-in-chief and in 1906 he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army.
Although purely ceremonial, these appointments reflected his familyAs close German ties. His mother, Queen Victoria, was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. Through Prince ArthurAs father, Prince Albert, he was also Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.); eNational Army Museum; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Pantaloons, HRH The Duke of Connaught, 3rd von Zieten Hussars, German Army" captures a significant moment in the life of Prince Arthur, the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Born on the 81st birthday of Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, he was named after his godfather. In 1879, Prince Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, cementing his ties with Germany. To commemorate this union, he was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment in the Imperial German Army. Later on, he ascended to become its colonel-in-chief and even attained the esteemed rank of field marshal within the German Army. While these appointments were purely ceremonial in nature, they reflected Prince Arthur's close familial connections with Germany. His mother Queen Victoria hailed from the House of Hanover and was Britain's last monarch from that lineage. Additionally, through his father Prince Albert's heritage as Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, he had further ties to Germany. This image showcases not only an important figure but also highlights historical alliances between nations during pre-World War I times. Preserved at London's National Army Museum as part of their collection from a German School artist belonging to the 20th century; it serves as a reminder that history is often intertwined with personal relationships and political affiliations.
