EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Royal Letters Patent granting equal rights for Portuguese, Spanish, and Avignonese Jews in France. Created by the French School in the 18th century, this engraving captures a pivotal moment in European history. The document itself is a broadside proclamation that marked the first-ever grant of equality of citizenship for Jewish people on the continent. Dating back to January 28,1790, in Paris, this significant event took place during the tumultuous era of the French Revolution. At that time, an estimated population of around 40,000 Jews resided in France. Those of Sephardic origin from Spain and Portugal had integrated into French society since their arrival in the 15th century and primarily lived in southern and southwestern regions. The emancipation granted to these Sephardic Jews was a groundbreaking step towards equality; however, it wasn't until 1791 that Ashkenazim Jews living mainly in Alsace and Lorraine were also granted similar rights. This act solidified France as the first country within Europe to liberate its Jewish population during this revolutionary period. Despite legal equality being established through these letters patent, anti-Semitism persisted throughout history as exemplified by events like the infamous Dreyfus affair during late-19th-century France. Nonetheless, this print serves as a powerful reminder of progress made towards inclusivity while acknowledging ongoing challenges faced by marginalized communities even after achieving legal recognition.
