EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving titled "S for Serpent, 1850" by Louis Simon Lassalle takes us back to the enchanting world of education in the 19th century. The artwork is part of an alphabet primer called "Jardin des Plantes" created by Mrs. Louise Leneveux under her nickname Marie-Louise Pignot. Measuring 18x12 cm, this delicate print showcases a beautifully detailed illustration of a serpent, highlighting its significance in the natural sciences and zoology. Lassalle's skillful hand brings out the intricate patterns on the snake's scaly skin, capturing its essence with precision. The alphabet primer was published by Mrs. Veuve Louis Janet in Paris in 1850 and featured not only sixteen lithographs drawn by Lassalle but also numerous vignettes on wood. It served as a valuable educational tool for children during that era, allowing them to learn about different animals while mastering their ABCs. This particular print is now held in a private collection but has been preserved through time thanks to Bridgeman Images' photographical expertise captured here by Duvallon. As we gaze upon this enchanting piece from the past, we are reminded of how art can transcend time and continue to inspire generations with its beauty and educational value.
