EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Silver Counter of Ambrose Dudley, Third Earl of Warwick, dating back to 1588. Crafted with intricate detail and measuring a mere 2.6x2.6 cm, this silver artifact is part of the esteemed Timothy Millett Collection. The counter bears two significant symbols: a bear and ragged staff on one side, accompanied by the Latin inscription "OMNIA TEMPUS HABENT" meaning "All things have their time". On the reverse side, a crowned lion passant is depicted alongside another Latin inscription stating "OMNIA TEMPUS HABET" which translates to "All things have time". Ambrose Dudley was an influential figure in Elizabethan England as he was not only the eldest son of the Duke of Northumberland but also brother to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester - Queen Elizabeth I's favorite courtier. Interestingly enough, Leicester possessed a strikingly similar counter. This remarkable piece serves as both a numismatic treasure and historical artifact. Its inscriptions and imagery reflect themes of temporality and power symbolized by lions and crowns. The fine craftsmanship displayed in this silver counter exemplifies the artistic skill prevalent during the 16th century. Preserved through time, this print allows us to appreciate Ambrose Dudley's legacy while offering insight into his familial connections within English nobility. It stands as a testament to an era defined by political intrigue and artistic brilliance.
