EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Sala Baglione, also known as the Hall of Grotesque, located in Rocca Meli Lupi in Soragna, Parma, Italy. The hall gets its name from the renowned Cremonese painter Cesare Baglione (c. 1550-1615), who adorned it with his mesmerizing frescoes during the 16th century. Baglione found his artistic expression most effective in depicting grotesques, a unique style of ornate decoration inspired by Pompeian designs. The perfectly preserved frescoes in this hall are particularly intriguing due to their extreme originality and artistic expression. At the center of the vaulted ceiling lies the coat of arms of both Farnese and Dukes of Parma and Piacenza, symbolizing their patronage. Meanwhile, on the lunettes (the curved spaces above doorways or windows), one can observe skillfully painted landscapes. The print captures not only these remarkable artworks but also architectural details such as an earthenware-tiled fireplace and a chest-like structure called cassapanca. These elements add depth to the overall composition and provide insight into Renaissance architecture. With its rich history and exquisite artistry, this image transports viewers back to a time when creativity flourished within Italian palaces. It serves as a testament to Cesare Baglione's talent and offers a glimpse into an era where beauty was celebrated through intricate decorations like grotesques.
