EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1900, where we find ourselves standing in front of Newgate Prison in London. Located at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey, this historic prison has a rich and tumultuous past dating back to its possible beginnings in the 12th century. Destroyed by riots between 1770-8, it was subsequently rebuilt but eventually closed its doors for good in 1902. The image, taken from Cassell's History of England vol. iv, published by Cassell & Co Ltd. , offers a glimpse into the early 20th century cityscape of London. The photograph has been skillfully colorized, bringing vibrancy to an era often associated with black-and-white imagery. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see a policeman patrolling outside the imposing walls of Newgate Prison. This visual juxtaposition highlights both order and chaos - the symbol of law enforcement against a backdrop steeped in crime and punishment. Newgate Prison stands as a testament to Britain's history and serves as a reminder of how society dealt with criminality during that period. It witnessed riots and housed countless prisoners throughout its existence. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece captured by Bridgeman Images from Fine Art Finder, we are transported back to Victorian London; feeling both intrigued by its dark allure and grateful for our modern-day justice system that has evolved since those times gone by.
