Do You Know: Why do men walk on outside of pavement? (colour litho)

8668156 Do You Know: Why do men walk on outside of pavement? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Why do men walk on outside of pavement? Perhaps this custom sprang from gallantry, and it is easy to associate it with the period when Raleigh spread his cloak over a particularly muddy patch so that Elizabeth might not soil her shoes. Streets were appallingly filthy in earlier days; vehicles and horses picked their way through garbage and indescribable muck, and as showers were constantly sprayed on pedestrians, men took an outside position to afford what protection they could to the fair sex, and their extravagant creations. During Elizabeth's time women wore high cork-soled slippers to lift their feet above the dirty water which lay in every street. EDITORS COMMENTS
This color lithograph titled "Do You Know: Why do men walk on outside of pavement?" by English School from the 20th century offers a glimpse into a historical custom that dates back to the days of gallantry and chivalry. The image depicts a scene where men are seen walking on the outside of the pavement, seemingly protecting women from the filth and muck that once littered the streets. The accompanying text sheds light on the origins of this practice, suggesting that it may have stemmed from acts of gallantry such as Sir Walter Raleigh spreading his cloak over muddy patches for Queen Elizabeth I to walk upon. In earlier times, streets were notoriously filthy with garbage and horse droppings, making it necessary for men to shield women's delicate footwear from getting soiled. During Queen Elizabeth's reign, women wore high cork-soled slippers to elevate their feet above dirty water puddles in every street. This illustration is part of a set of educational cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939, providing insight into historical customs and traditions. Overall, this print serves as a reminder of past societal norms and gestures of courtesy towards women during an era when cleanliness was not always guaranteed on city streets.
