An Officer of the 6th Regiment of Foot, 1843 circa (oil on canvas)
5925048 An Officer of the 6th Regiment of Foot, 1843 circa (oil on canvas) by Cunliffe, Daniel (fl.1843); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: An Officer of the 6th Regiment of Foot, 1843 circa.
Oil on canvas attributed to Daniel Cunliffe (fl. 1826-1855) 1843 circa.
In his short career Daniel Cunliffe produced a number of highly detailed paintings of military subjects. This portrait dates from the period when the 6th Regiment of Foot was stationed in Portsmouth, where Cunliffe lived, after its return from India. Cunliffes sketchbooks of that year are devoted to studies of the 6th Foot.
The officer in this painting wears the full dress uniform expected at formal occasions, such as a parade, or dinner in the Officers Mess. This contrasts with another Cunliffe painting in this Museums collection, of the 6th Foot on manoeuvres, where the officers are wearing plain, dark blue service coats. The Roman numeral VI, representing the number 6, is visible on this officers shoulder-belt plate, and on his shako plate. The shako was the most common form of military headgear during the first half of the nineteenth century.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite oil on canvas painting titled "An Officer of the 6th Regiment of Foot, 1843 circa" by Daniel Cunliffe. Created during his short but prolific career as a painter, Cunliffe's attention to detail is evident in this highly realistic portrayal of a military officer. The artwork depicts an officer dressed in the full ceremonial uniform worn for formal occasions such as parades or dinners at the Officers Mess. This contrasts with another painting by Cunliffe in the National Army Museum's collection, where officers are depicted wearing plain service coats during manoeuvres. The Roman numeral VI can be seen on both the officer's shoulder-belt plate and shako plate, symbolizing their affiliation with the 6th Regiment of Foot. Painted around 1843 when the regiment was stationed in Portsmouth after returning from India, this portrait offers a glimpse into military life during that era. It reflects Cunliffe's dedication to capturing accurate representations of military subjects through meticulous study and observation. Displayed proudly at London's National Army Museum, this remarkable piece serves as a testament to both Cunliffe's artistic talent and the historical significance of the 6th Regiment of Foot. Its presence evokes curiosity about the lives and experiences of these officers who served their country with honor and distinction.
