Guillotined Rococo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from 1791 depicts Marie Therese Louise de Savoie-Carignan, Princess of Lamballe. A close friend and confidante of Queen Marie-Antoinette, the princess exudes an air of elegance and grace in this portrait by Henri-Pierre Danloux. Seated with poise and regality, she embodies the epitome of aristocracy during the rococo era. The artist skillfully captures every intricate detail of her attire, showcasing the opulence and grandeur associated with royalty. Her lavish gown drapes around her figure flawlessly, adorned with delicate lace accents that add a touch of femininity to her ensemble. The interior setting further enhances the sense of luxury surrounding her, as she sits upon an ornate chair fit for a princess. Tragically, despite her privileged position within society, Princess Lamballe's fate took a dark turn just one year after this portrait was created. Sentenced to death during the tumultuous times of the French Revolution, she met a gruesome end at the guillotine on September 3rd, 1792. This engraving serves as both a testament to Princess Lamballe's beauty and as a reminder of the turbulent times that marked this period in history. Preserved by Musee Carnavalet in Paris today, it stands as a poignant tribute to an extraordinary woman whose life was cut short far too soon.
