Efim Repin, the painters father, began his career as a troupe man in the Chuguev garrison. He took part in three military campaigns between 1826 and 1849. Although he was still considered a serf, before serfdom was abolished in 1861, this service in the army granted him permission to trade horses in the years 1840-1850. After the death of his wife in 1880, he spent the last years of his life on his sons estate in Zdravnievo, near Vitebsk (present-day Belarus). In this portrait influenced by Rembrandts art, Repin shows him in an activity that his father liked, reading the Holy Scriptures.); Photo © Sylvain Collet
