Watercolour by Captain Robert Gosset Woodthorpe, RE and Captain Thomas Hungerford Holdich, RE.
This painting is a companion piece to a work by an Afghan artist that was painted around the time of the First Afghan War (1838-42) for an unknown Afghan patron. It showed a mounted Afghan sirdar with a British soldier running alongside. The latter work was found by Major-General Sir (later Field Marshal Lord) Frederick Roberts in Amir Sher AliAs palace in Kabul in October 1879, during the Second Afghan War (1878-80). Roberts was so taken with his discovery that he had two of his officers paint a new version (shown here) with the British and Afghan roles reversed, with a Trooper of the 9th (QueenAs Royal) Lancers riding alongside a running Afghan soldier.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in the late 19th century, showcasing a Trooper of the 9th Lancers riding alongside an Afghan soldier. The image, originally painted as a watercolor by Captain Robert Gosset Woodthorpe and Captain Thomas Hungerford Holdich, is now preserved at the National Army Museum in London. The painting itself serves as a companion piece to an artwork created by an Afghan artist during the First Afghan War. It depicts a mounted Afghan sirdar accompanied by a British soldier running beside him. Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts stumbled upon this remarkable piece while exploring Amir Sher Ali's palace in Kabul during the Second Afghan War. Enamored with his discovery, Roberts commissioned two of his officers to recreate the scene with reversed roles - hence this particular painting. Here we witness a Trooper of the renowned 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers confidently galloping on horseback while being shadowed by an agile Afghan soldier sprinting alongside him. This powerful visual representation symbolizes not only cultural exchange but also mutual respect between these two nations amidst times of conflict. It stands as testament to historical connections and shared experiences that transcend borders and time periods. Preserved for generations to come, this print from Fine Art Finder reminds us of our collective past and encourages reflection on how history shapes our present realities.
