The Fighting in Upper Burma, with the Chindwin River Expedition
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving that takes us back to the 19th century. In this print, we witness a rushed landing of British forces in a small village along the Chindwin River. The enemy lies bare and ready to confront their invaders as they move forward to cut through the deserted village. A steam launch filled with determined men steps onto the stockade led by Major Browne, their faces stern and focused. Storming towards the river's cliffs, they face fierce firing from the retreating enemy who seeks refuge within pagodas and steamers. Days of fighting have stormed this once peaceful village, leaving planks scattered across its entrance. As our party climbs higher towards Balet Myo town, they are met with intense fire from stockaded buildings on elevated heights. Gallantly occupying strategic positions around them, British infantry bravely opens fire on their enemies' earthworks, barracks, and jingal battery. Wheeler's steamer Aphyouk protects them at all costs while engaging in battle against an enemy battery. In this clash of conflict between two forces confronting each other without hesitation or fear, both sides fight for victory amidst nudity and chaos. The cliff becomes a battleground where bravery is tested and lives are lost. This engraving captures not only the intensity of war but also highlights the determination of those involved in "The Fighting in Upper Burma". It serves as a reminder of historical events that shaped nations and changed lives forever.
