The duel is part of Russian literature: the famous poet Alexander Pushkin perishes, and the writer Ivan Turgenev describes one in his novel Fathers and Sons (1862). From 1895, Repine created several canvases on this theme that fascinated him. He documents himself on duels between officers with a military lawyer friend and endeavours in his paintings to depict the moods of duelists. In 1897, he successfully presented at the second Venice International Exhibition a large version of this composition, subtitled " Forgive me!".); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of Ilya Efimovich Repin's masterpiece, "THE DUEL". Painted in 1897, this oil on canvas artwork is housed in the prestigious Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia. The painting depicts a significant event from Russian literature where the renowned poet Alexander Pushkin tragically loses his life during a duel. Inspired by this theme, Repin created multiple works exploring the emotions and atmosphere surrounding duels between officers. In 1897, Repin presented an impressive large-scale version of this composition at the second Venice International Exhibition with the subtitle "Forgive me!". This particular detail captures the intense moment when two duelists confront each other with pistols drawn. The clash between these men symbolizes conflict and battle while also representing themes of masculinity and mortality. Repin's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke, as he skillfully portrays not only the physicality of combat but also the emotional turmoil experienced by those involved. This print allows viewers to appreciate both the artistry behind Repin's work and its historical significance within Russian culture. With Sylvain Collet capturing this image for Fine Art Finder through Bridgeman Images, we are granted a glimpse into one of Russia's most iconic artworks from the late nineteenth century. It serves as a powerful reminder of how art can immortalize important moments in history while evoking deep emotions within its audience.
