Nikolai Murashko (1844-1909) was a fellow student and friend of Repin at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Landscape painter, art critic and teacher, he left in 1876 for Kiev, where he opened a school of painting. Many artists, including Repine, donated their paintings to him to create a museum.
