4th Captains Colour, Sir Gells Regiment of Infantry, 1646 circa (fabric)

5927288 4th Captains Colour, Sir Gells Regiment of Infantry, 1646 circa (fabric) by English School, (17th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: 4th Captains Colour, Sir Gells Regiment of Infantry, 1646 circa.
Gell was High Sheriff of Derbyshire when he was commissioned as Colonel to raise a Parliamentarian regiment during the English Civil War (1642-1651). His regiment took part in several engagements including the sieges of Chester and Lichfield and the battle of Hopton Heath.
Gell became disaffected with the political direction taken by the Parliamentary regime after the kings surrender in 1646. A further cause of disillusionment was Parliaments reluctance to compensate him for losses he incurred in fighting the war. In 1646 his regiment was disbanded and he was relieved of all appointments. Gell moved to London where he made contact with Royalist agents but in 1650 he was found guilty of knowing of a royalist plot and not revealing it to the authorities. Imprisoned in the Tower of London, Gell was released in 1653 on grounds of ill health. He was pardoned by King Charles II at the Restoration in 1660 and given an appointment at court.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print of the "4th Captains Colour, Sir Gells Regiment of Infantry, 1646 circa" transports us back to a pivotal moment in history during the English Civil War. This fabric artwork, created by an anonymous English artist from the 17th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. Sir Gell, originally serving as High Sheriff of Derbyshire, was commissioned as Colonel to raise a Parliamentarian regiment during this tumultuous period. His regiment played a significant role in various engagements including sieges and battles such as Chester, Lichfield, and Hopton Heath. However, disillusionment soon struck Sir Gell due to his disapproval of the political direction taken by the Parliamentary regime after King Charles I's surrender in 1646. Furthermore, he felt neglected when Parliament failed to compensate him for his losses incurred during battle. As a consequence, his regiment was disbanded and all appointments were revoked. Seeking solace in London amidst these turbulent times, Sir Gell made contact with Royalist agents but faced repercussions when found guilty of withholding knowledge about a royalist plot from authorities. Imprisoned within the Tower of London until 1653 on grounds of ill health before being released. With King Charles II's restoration in 1660 came redemption for Sir Gell as he received both pardon and an appointment at court. The intricate details captured within this historical artifact serve as a reminder not only of Sir Gell's complex journey but also reflect upon the broader struggles faced during one of England's most defining conflicts.
