EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Witton and Daw and Co. 45 inch percussion revolver, a remarkable piece of weaponry from the 19th century. With its six chambers and intricate design, this revolver represents a significant era in history. What makes this particular firearm even more intriguing is the metal mount added to it, bearing an inscription that tells a tragic tale. Lieutenant Charles Medcalfe Halhed, belonging to the 54th Madras Native Infantry, met his untimely demise on the British Burma border in 1862 at the hands of dacoits – notorious bandits of that time. Halhed's bravery is evident as he managed to shoot down three dacoits with his trusty weapon. However, fate took an unfortunate turn when his revolver misfired during his fourth shot. It was this moment that ultimately led to his downfall. The revolver itself boasts a reciprocating gas check cylinder based on Lang's patent, making it highly sought after in India during those times. Its popularity among soldiers stationed there speaks volumes about its reliability and effectiveness as a defensive tool. As we gaze upon this print captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, we are reminded not only of Lieutenant Halhed's sacrifice but also of the turbulent nature of border frontiers during that period in history. This image serves as both a memorial to fallen officers like Halhed and a testament to their unwavering courage amidst adversity.
