EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of a George I twelve-light chandelier, dating back to approximately 1719. Crafted with gilt-gesso, this masterpiece by James Moore (attributed) stands at an impressive size of 124x101.5x101.5 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The chandelier's central column is adorned with a ducal coronet above a corinthian capital, leading to four scrolled branches featuring brass drip-pans and nozzles. Above these branches lies a baluster section embellished with intricate scrolls, followed by eight scrolled branches carved with acanthus husks and foliage over a hatched ground. The griffin terminals surmounting the branches add an element of grandeur, each equipped with brass drip-pans and nozzles. At the top sits a sphere boasting gadrooned upper parts and four cartouches enclosing pounced ovals against a hatched ground backdrop. A striking four-leaf acanthus finial crowns the composition while replaced metal lower finials enhance its central thread. Although some elements have been replaced or restored throughout history, including one large branch in the 19th century, much of the original gesso remains intact alongside its remarkable water-gilding from that era. This photograph captures every minute detail of this extraordinary chandelier, offering viewers an opportunity to appreciate its opulence and craftsmanship up close. It serves as both an artistic marvel from the 18th century and as testament to timeless elegance in interior design.
