EDITORS COMMENTS
The Officers Presentation Sword awarded to Lieutenant Samuel Snook is a testament to his bravery and humanitarian efforts during the 18th century. This magnificent metal sword, created by an English School artist, now resides in the National Army Museum in London. Lieutenant Snook received this prestigious sword from the East India Company Court of Directors in 1799 for his remarkable act of returning a group of stranded women back to their home in the Pelew Islands (Palau) in the Pacific. The locals were overjoyed upon their arrival, as reported by Snook himself, and this selfless act greatly improved relations with the local tribes. Snook's earlier work surveying the Pelews aboard "The Panther" had already brought him recognition. His expertise and dedication led him to become Commodore in Goa by 1818. The Bombay Marine, which was responsible for protecting East India Company ports and trading vessels from rival European powers and Asian pirates, also entrusted its personnel with surveying and exploring Far Eastern waters. Lieutenant Samuel Snook's contributions not only safeguarded these vital trade routes but also fostered goodwill between different cultures. This print captures both the historical significance of Lieutenant Samuel Snook's achievements as well as showcases this exquisite piece of weaponry that symbolizes honor, courage, and compassion.
