EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a framed color drawing on grey paper, showcasing Arthur M. Browne in a half-length portrait profile. Created by Ellen Sharples in October 1803, this pastel artwork depicts Browne, who was a prominent figure in Irish politics and law during the late 18th century. Trained at Trinity College, Dublin, Browne went on to become a Member of Parliament for Dublin University in the Irish Parliament and served as Prime Serjeant of Ireland. Ellen Sharples recounts in her diary how Miss Serjeant introduced her cousin Mr. Brown to sit for her son's portrait while he was away from home. Despite being nervous, Sharples managed to exceed her own expectations with the final result. This particular print is one of three copies made by Ellen Sharples in 1805. It now resides at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK after being purchased by eBristol Museums, Galleries & Archives in 1931. The image provides an intimate glimpse into the life and accomplishments of Arthur M. Browne during his time as a respected lawyer and politician. The delicate pastel technique used by Sharples adds depth and character to his likeness, capturing both his stature and influence within Irish society at that time.
