As part of the ceremony, Calkoen and his retinue were offered a meal by the grand vizier Nevsehirli Damat Abrahim Pasa, assisted by interpreters. The sultan could listen (unnoticed) behind the small grilled window above -hence called the Eye of the Sultan.
