Side Chair, c. 1770 (mahogany)

500047 Side Chair, c.1770 (mahogany) by American School, (18th century); h:97.00 w:60.00 d:56.90 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The middle section, or splat, of this chair back, with its Gothic pointed arches, may be related to the style invented by the English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. English chairs of this pattern are known, so the design probably originated there and was transmitted to this side of the Atlantic, perhaps by means of an imported example. This chair comes from a set made for Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards of Philadelphia, a furniture making center famous for its carved ornament. This chair features several finely and naturalistically carved details.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Side Chair from around 1770, crafted out of rich mahogany. Created by the American School in the 18th century, this chair stands at an impressive height of 97.00 cm with dimensions of 60.00 cm in width and 56.90 cm in depth. Housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this exquisite piece holds historical significance. The standout feature of this chair lies within its middle section or splat, adorned with Gothic pointed arches reminiscent of Thomas Chippendale's innovative style. It is believed that English chairs bearing a similar pattern inspired this design and made their way across the Atlantic to America, possibly through imported examples. Originally part of a set commissioned for Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards of Philadelphia - renowned for its exceptional carved ornamentation - this particular chair boasts several finely detailed carvings executed with remarkable naturalism. With its ornate woodwork and intricate patterns, this side chair exemplifies the decorative prowess prevalent during Pennsylvania's furniture-making heyday in the late 18th century. Its presence serves as a testament to both skilled craftsmanship and refined taste. Captured beautifully by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Fine Art Finder, this print immortalizes an elegant piece that seamlessly blends functionality with artistic expression from America's colonial past.
