EDITORS COMMENTS
The lithograph titled "An Impending Catastrophe" captures the political tension and power struggle during the 1868 US presidential election. Published by Currier & Ives, a renowned printmaking firm in New York, this artwork depicts key figures of the time. In the center, we see Horatio Seymour, Governor of New York and Democratic Presidential candidate for that year. He stands defiantly on the tracks, symbolizing his desire to let the Republican train proceed unchecked. On the other side is Francis Preston Blair, Democratic Vice Presidential candidate who had returned to his party after a brief stint with Republicans. Blair aims to derail this Republican locomotive. However, determined not to be stopped are Ulysses Grant and Schuyler Colfax - engineers of the train named "Reconstruction". Grant was serving as America's 18th President at that time while Colfax held office as its 17th Vice President. They represent progress and continuity amidst political turmoil. General John Adams Dix echoes his famous dispatch from 1861: "If any man attempts to haul down the American flag. . . shoot him on the spot". This quote emphasizes Dix's unwavering commitment to preserving unity within a divided nation. Lastly, George Brinton McClellan laments his affiliation with Democrats despite being a Union Army General during the Civil War. This historic lithograph serves as both an artistic representation and commentary on one of America's most critical elections. It showcases conflicting ideologies and personalities vying for control over post-war reconstruction policies.
