Sailors in a fight, 1798 (mezzotint)
7342161 Sailors in a fight, 1798 (mezzotint) by Stothard, Thomas (1755-1834) (after); 60.3x50.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Stothard, Thomas [artist]; Ward, William [engraver]; John Raphael Smith [publisher]
Entitled Sailors in a Fight, this print is inscribed: To the British Navy this plate is respectfully dedicated by there [sic] obedient humble Ser[van]t. John Raphael Smith'. It is one of a set of four plates of effectively the same size and vertical format celebrating the British sailor, issued by Smith after Stothard with the same official 1798 publication date. They comprise three similar group shipboard scenes - Sailors in a Fight (PAH7352), Sailors in a Storm (PAH7353) and Sailors in Port (PAH7355), and the rather different A Sailor's Return in Peace to his family (PAH7354).
The first two of Fight and Storm are mezzotints but for reasons yet to be explained the other two are aquatints. All were probably done from oils, though not necessarily finished ones. The oil of the Sailor's Return (BHC1125) is probably a much more sketchy canvas last sold by Christie's South Kensington from the Arthur Ackermann and Peter Johnson gallery collection on 8 May 2008.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking mezzotint print, titled "Sailors in a Fight" and created by Thomas Stothard in 1798, captures the intense energy and chaos of a naval battle. The scene depicts British sailors engaged in combat, their faces set in determined grimaces as they fight for victory on the high seas.
The dedication inscribed on the print reads: 'To the British Navy this plate is respectfully dedicated by there [sic] obedient humble Ser[van]t. John Raphael Smith', highlighting the artist's admiration and respect for the brave men who served in the Royal Navy during this tumultuous period.
Part of a series of four prints celebrating 'the British sailor', this particular artwork is part of an official publication from 1798. Alongside similar scenes depicting sailors battling storms at sea and returning home to their families, "Sailors in a Fight" stands out for its raw intensity and dynamic composition.
Through intricate details and masterful technique, Stothard brings to life the drama and danger faced by these seafaring heroes. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served their country with courage and honor on the open ocean.
