Cape Town, c. 1862 (w / c)
5929379 Cape Town, c.1862 (w/c) by Sanford, George E.L.S. (fl.1862); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Cape Town, 1862 (c).
From a box of 81 watercolours by Lieutenant (later General) George E Ls Sanford, Royal Engineers, 1859-1862.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands had ceded Cape Town to the British in January 1814. Its strategic position as the halfway point between Europe and Asia meant that prior to the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 almost every ship heading east docked at Cape Town. Sanford painted this view during a break in his voyage to take part in the 2nd China War (1857-1860).); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Cape Town, c. 1862" takes us back in time to the bustling city of Cape Town during the mid-19th century. The artwork was created by Lieutenant George E Ls Sanford, a talented artist and member of the Royal Engineers. The image showcases a picturesque view of Cape Town's landscape, beautifully captured with watercolors. We can see the city's iconic Table Mountain towering majestically in the background, while ships dotting the harbor add a sense of movement and liveliness to the scene. During this period, Cape Town held great strategic importance as it served as a crucial stopover for ships traveling between Europe and Asia. This made it an essential port for trade and exploration before the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
