5921627 Sir Charles James Napier, 1848 (b/w photo) by McCosh, John (1805-85); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Sir Charles James Napier, 1848.
Photograph by Surgeon John McCosh (1805-1885), Bengal Army, 1848.
The eldest of four famous brothers in whom the Duke of Wellington took a great interest, Charles Napier had an exemplary military career. He is best known as the Conqueror of Sind in 1843, for which he was made a GCB. He is also remembered as a gifted administrator for his work as Resident for Cephalonia. The marble statue of him in St Pauls Cathedral bears the inscription, A prescient general, a beneficent governor, a just man. The fact that the majority of the subscribers to the statue of him in the south-west corner of Trafalgar Square were private soldiers is also testimony of his popularity in the Army.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished figure of Sir Charles James Napier in 1848. Taken by Surgeon John McCosh, a member of the Bengal Army, this portrait showcases Napier's commanding presence and military prowess. As the eldest of four renowned brothers who caught the attention of the Duke of Wellington himself, Napier had an illustrious career in the military. His most notable achievement was his conquest of Sind in 1843, earning him the prestigious honor of being made a GCB (Knight Grand Cross). However, he is also remembered for his exceptional administrative skills during his time as Resident for Cephalonia. The marble statue dedicated to him in St Paul's Cathedral bears an inscription that aptly describes him as "a prescient general, a beneficent governor, a just man". This testament to his character further emphasizes his remarkable qualities both on and off the battlefield. What sets Sir Charles James Napier apart is not only his military accomplishments but also his popularity among private soldiers. The fact that they were majority subscribers to the statue erected in Trafalgar Square speaks volumes about their admiration for him. This photograph is part of an album containing 310 images captured between 1848 and 1853. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, it serves as a timeless tribute to one of history's great leaders.
