EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elegant and regal beauty of Maria Amelia, Queen Consort of Portugal. Taken in the 19th century by a French photographer, this portrait showcases her grace and poise. Maria Amelia was the daughter of Philippe d Orleans, Comte de Paris and Marie Isabelle d Orleans, and she became the last Queen Consort of Portugal when she married Carlos, Prince of Portugal in 1886. As Queen Consort, Maria Amelia played an important role alongside her husband who later became King of Portugal in 1889. However, their reign was cut short when Carlos was tragically assassinated in 1908. Despite this tragedy, Maria Amelia's legacy as a queen remains intact. In this photograph, Stefano Bianchetti beautifully captures the essence of Maria Amelia's royal presence. Her eyes exude strength and determination while her posture reflects her noble upbringing. The intricate details on her dress showcase the opulence associated with royalty during that era. This print is not just a historical artifact but also a testament to the resilience and dignity displayed by Maria Amelia throughout her life. It serves as a reminder of an era long gone but still remembered for its grandeur and sophistication.
