John Thomson described the scene: " Extreme left is a maker of soup like his father before him. He carries his small kitchen around with him meeting his regular customers at stated hours in certain parts of the town. Centre, a public scribe, writing a letter at the dictation of a lady. His table and chair and apparatus are portable, the figure behind him is a beggar. Next is an itinerant barber. The customer is seated on a cabinet containing four drawers. The upper one holds his earnings, the second contains his tiny instruments, the third perhaps a dozen razors, whilst the lowest drawer contains his towels, combs and brushes. The two remaining figures on the right represent a wood turner and his cutomer who is examining a wooden ladle.); Scottish, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Street Groups, Kiu-Kiang" captures the vibrant scenes of everyday life in 19th century China. Taken by renowned photographer John Thomson between 1867 and 1872, this image offers a fascinating glimpse into the bustling streets of Kiu-Kiang (now Jiujang), located on the southern shores of the Yangtze River. Thomson's keen eye for detail allows us to observe various street vendors and craftsmen going about their daily routines. On the extreme left, we see a soup maker carrying his portable kitchen as he meets his regular customers at specific times throughout town. In the center, a public scribe diligently writes a letter dictated by a lady while seated at his portable table and chair. Behind him stands a beggar patiently observing. Moving along, an itinerant barber attends to his customer who sits atop a cabinet containing drawers filled with earnings, instruments, razors, towels, combs, and brushes. Finally, on the right side of the photograph stand two figures – one is identified as a wood turner showcasing his craftsmanship to an intrigued customer examining a wooden ladle. Through this snapshot frozen in time over 150 years ago, Thomson skillfully transports us back to an era where these street groups were integral parts of Chinese society. This remarkable piece from Thomson's collection serves as both historical documentation and artistic expression that continues to captivate viewers today.
