EDITORS COMMENTS
In this engraving titled "An Englishman's Journey across Corea with Bread and Jam" we are transported back to the 19th century, following an adventurous traveler through the mysterious land of Corea (now known as Korea). The image depicts a scene from a publication called The Graphic, dated December 22,1888. As our English protagonist embarks on his journey, he finds solace in familiar comforts such as bread and jam. With fire water gracefully meeting his smoking pipe, he feels safe amidst the cordial reception of Corean porters. Their serene faces suggest a warm welcome to this foreign visitor. The taste of tobacco brings degrees of ecstasy to our traveler's longing for adventure. Through pantomime and an interpreter by his side, he strikes up conversations with locals who seem equally curious about him. Resuming their apathy towards outsiders after initial surprise fades away. Halfway through his expedition, our intrepid explorer turns to settle down for a momentary rest. Protected by the sinews of war - cash in hand - he enjoys white bread loaves slathered with butter under the sun-drenched sky. This artwork beautifully captures not only the physical journey but also highlights cultural exchanges between East and West during that era. It serves as a reminder that even in distant lands like Corea (Korea), human connections can be forged over simple pleasures like food and shared experiences.
